I want to explore the concept of human connection—specifically connections and the relationships that link us to others and how that affects us. This interest stemmed from moving out of first-year university accommodation and how that affected friendships and communications. Through this, I want to explore the different human connections such as friends, family and colleagues through social events or intimate social gatherings. Also i want to consider the other side of this by discussing ideas of human disconnections, such as isolation, loneliness and feeling invisible.

The image on the left explores Impasto. I was interested in using this technique to develop my work, and it can bring something to the topic of human connection. The idea of layering made me think of trying to cover things up like mistakes. I wanted to incorporate this idea in my work, so I painted, like I usually would, what I’m comfortable with, and once done, I would go over it with paint straight from the tube. It made the piece look rawer and more organic, which I’ve tried to achieve in other paintings. I find it reflects the real world; it’s not smooth and flat; it’s messy and bumpy; it has dimensions and can bring people together.

The artwork on the right is a photo taken from a Three-second video examining the flow in which things happen and how natural things are between two close friends. I chose this clip because it came from the 2.2-second mark; it shows what the near outcome was meant to be. What I like about this is that it is an intimate moment to be captured, which isn’t forced. It’s being honest. There is no forced face or pose. Through making a painting from this photo, I didnt want it to be overly detailed or fully finished. This is because it is ever-moving as if it were a story, so completing it would end this continuing story.
