Perception

Through this series of works, I want to explore the theme of connection and how individuals react to moments in time. By considering perspective, I highlight that each experience is unique and can not be understood by the people around it because they have viewed it differently or not at all. The artworks below were exhibited at the end-of-year exhibition at Staffordshire University called 'Omina'.

Human Preception

I want to explore the concept of human connection—specifically connections and the relationships that link us to others and how that affects us. This interest stemmed from moving out of first-year university accommodation and how that affected friendships and communications. Through this, I want to explore the different human connections such as friends, family and colleagues through social events or intimate social gatherings. Also i want to consider the other side of this by discussing ideas of human disconnections, such as isolation, loneliness and feeling invisible.

Memory

In three paintings, Katie examined memory and how we look back on previously repressed memories. Memory repression can occur when someone sees something traumatic that their brain blocks out as a defence mechanism.

Mental health

In 2022, Katie started exploring mental health by examining their struggles with anxiety and memory repression. Katie addresses this through expressive mark-making and blurry outcomes with drawings and acrylic paintings.

Photography

To take a break from painting, I engage in photography to gain a deeper understanding of my interests and to find inspiration for future projects. I primarily utilize a mobile phone camera for most of these photographs, as I find it grants me a greater sense of control compared to traditional cameras, with which I have limited experience.
